This whimsical Edwardian-style insect brooch (and pendant!) is a beautifully made reproduction that captures the charm and mechanical playfulness of antique jewelry.  The body and head are topped with two large prong-set opals that glow with the fiery color opals are loved for, while bezel-set sapphire cabochons create deep blue, expressive eyes.  Rose-cut diamonds scatter across the silver-topped surface, adding subtle sparkle against the warm 18k yellow gold body.

The piece is wonderfully animated:  the head moves gently side to side, and the wings are articulated en tremblant, creating a lively shimmer with even the slightest movement. Look closely and you’ll notice delicate millegrain work between the diamonds and charming details in the tiny legs and feet that show careful craftsmanship on a very small scale.

It fastens with a simple open C-clasp, typical of older brooches. The double-loop proboscis at the head also allows a chain to pass through, so it can easily be worn as a pendant--no conversion necessary.  A distinctive and playful piece with an antique spirit.
